The coyote (Canis latrans) is a great survivor and one of the most successful predators on Earth. Despite being shot, trapped and poisoned its numbers are on the increase and its range expanding. It has a distinctive yapping howl, which floats for several kms on a single night. Where wolves are eliminated, the coyote becomes top predator, eating everything from snakes and insects to small mammals, domestic fowl and pets, fruit, carrion and domestic rubbish. It usually hunts alone. However, intriguingly, individual coyotes have been observed teaming up with a badger to hunt burrowing rodents: the coyote scents the quarry, the badger digs it out and they share the spoils.
